North East England takes on the World

North East England has been chosen to host the first ever World Travel Awards Europe.

World Travel Awards Europe

The prestigious event will be held at The Sage Gateshead on October 8th and 9th and will attract over 500 travel professionals to the region helping to raise the profile of North East England as a fantastic international travel destination.

The 2-day conference will culminate in a glittering awards ceremony that will be broadcast into more than 250 million homes in over 160 countries via BBC World, which is also seen in 1.3 million hotel rooms and on 36 airlines and 46 cruise ships. Travel writers from across the globe will also be covering the event, turning the media spotlight onto NewcastleGateshead and beyond.

North East England was chosen as the hosts after the “Passionate people. Passionate places” campaign won “World’s Leading Regional Marketing Campaign” two years in a row at the awards.

The awards will open up a number of new business opportunities for the region with key leaders in the travel industry.

As well as the awards ceremony there is also a CEO Forum attracting 200 of the world’s top travel executives such as Salvator Catania, CEO of Europcar as well as discerning figures from the region including Paul Callaghan, chairman of Leighton group and John Hays, Managing Director of Hays Travel. Guest speakers including chairman of VisitBritain Christopher Rodrigues.

Passionate about enterprise

In conjunction with the Guardian a major supplement promoting North East England as a great place to start a new business has been published. Written by the Guardian’s top team of journalists, it covers those unique aspects of our region – our superb cultural assets, our history and heritage, that make North East England a first-class business location.

It includes a number of case studies of people who’ve successfully established their own enterprises, and tells a powerful story about the benefits of doing business in North East England, alongside some fantastic imagery of the region and the quality of life to be found here.

1001 Great Things about North East EnglandThe ‘Passionate people. Passionate places’ campaign has joined forces with the Northern Echo to bring you 1001 Great Things about North East England. The 28-page supplement highlights all that makes our region a great place to live, work and visit, including living legends, dialect, architecture, attractions and even regional myths and folklore. Sharon’s Mega Impact on Capital

Campaign supporter Dr Sharon Stephen with one of the mega bannersCampaign supporter Dr Sharon Stephen, programme manager at Avecia Biotechnology in Billingham, decided to see first hand the impact a mega banner on which she featured was having on London. The banner was one of three erected in Central London to help promote the region as an excellent place to do business, live, work, study and visit. The outdoor advertising campaign ran for two months and was seen an estimated 6.5million times.

North East England’s Norwegian Blockbuster

‘Passionate people. Passionate places’ TV advert is broadcast in cinemas around NorwayThe Regional Image campaign will be spreading the region’s passion further as the ‘Passionate people. Passionate places’ TV advert is broadcast in cinemas around Norway.

By the end of its two month run, almost all of the country’s 4.5m population will have had a chance to see North East England at its best thanks to images of Durham Castle and Cathedral, Bamburgh beach, Roseberry Topping and NewcastleGateshead’s quayside appearing across the country.

The campaign has been supported by local hotels and travel providers who have provided special offers and prizes that will run alongside the advertising campaign aimed at potential visitors, and continue to build on what is already a very successful route across the North Sea.

Passionate about weddings

The “Passionate people. Passionate places” campaign is making an impact across the region and it has also recently been part of one couple’s special day. Craig and Lesley Blundred were looking for a unique piece of music to accompany their wedding ceremony at The Sage Gateshead and found exactly what they were looking for when watching the “Passionate people. Passionate places” TV ad. With help from the Regional Image Team they were able to track the producers of the original tune in time for Lesley to make her grand entrance.

Passionate about our supporters

Chesters Walled Garden is now supporting the campaign using the “Passionate about gardening” logo Businesses, organisations and individuals continue to show their support for the campaign using the Passionate about and North East England branding in a number of innovative ways.

Access hire company Warren Access has transformed its fleet of hydraulic platform machines using the “Passionate people. Passionate places” and North East England branding alongside iconic regional images, including the Angel of the North and Tyne Bridge.

Chesters Walled Garden, near Chollerford, Northumberland, is now also supporting the campaign using the “Passionate about gardening” logo on their home-page and on-line photo gallery.

Top chef Tony Binks and owner of the popular village pub the Barrasford Arms, in Barrasford, NorthumberlandTop chef Tony Binks and owner of the popular village pub the Barrasford Arms, in Barrasford, Northumberland, is also demonstrating his passion for North East England with a “Passionate about great food” logo on his menus and stationery.

Durham Amateur Rowing Club Durham Amateur Rowing Club is the latest organisation to show its support for the campaign by emblazoning “Passionate about rowing” across their chests. Members of the club wore the new T-shirts with pride for the first time at the Durham City Regatta, the biggest event in the club’s calendar, held on May 12-13. The Regatta attracts competitors from around the country with 850 rowers taking part each day.

Club captain Phill Tully said members were keen to get involved in the campaign to help raise the profile of the region: “I have been extremely impressed with the work of the Regional Image campaign. As a club we want to get involved in shouting about the region,” he said. For more information on the club go to www.durham-arc.org.uk

Finally, Ideal Caravans and Job Centre Plus are showing they are passionate about North East England by displaying the ‘Passionate people. Passionate places’ printed adverts in their offices.

Passionate about regeneration

former Westgate House site in Newcastle City CentreAs part of the ongoing regeneration of the former Westgate House site in Newcastle City Centre, the passionate people of the Regional Image campaign are featured on a brand new 16m hoarding on Westgate Road. Terry Laybourne, Dr Arnab Basu, Fiona Raglan and Dr Sharon Stephen will greet visitors to the busy Central Station area over the coming months as work is completed on the site.

Passionate about food

North East England Chef of The YearThe ‘Passionate people. Passionate places’ campaign was proud to support the North East England Chef of The Year for the second year running. Fifteen of the region’s finest from the culinary world showed they were passionate about food in a hard-fought ‘cook-off’ at Gateshead Leisure Centre.

After much deliberation Dave Kennedy from the Black Door Restaurant was awarded the coveted crown, and goes on to represent the region in the semi-finals of the national Chef of the Year competition. Dave will also have the honour of demonstrating North East England’s finest cooking on board the QE2 when it sails into the Port of Tyne from Southampton on 16th September.
